Elk City School Board president Shawn Wilson will resign within two weeks, he confirmed Monday.

He must leave the office because the school administration is planning to hire his daughter, McKenna Wilson, as a teacher at Grandview 5th and 6th Grade Center and assistant softball coach at the high school. Wilson confirmed the information when reached by telephone Monday afternoon.

Wilson has served on the Elk City School Board for more than 11 years.

Because of his position on the board, and a possible conflict of interest between a sitting board president overseeing the hiring of a family member, he must submit his resignation before the next regular board meeting July 9. The board has one more meeting, on June 28, to finish up the district's business before the start of the fiscal year.

Wilson has served on the board during some of its most tumultuous times during recent years, including the passage of a uniform dress code and a failed bond issue that would have built a new elementary school.
