For over 70 years there has been a Pierce at the Elk City Fire Department. But come 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, the last Pierce will have stepped out of the door for the last time.

Julius Pierce began the long tradition in 1941 when he began work at the department. In 1960, his son Jake followed in his footsteps. In 1977, Barry, Julius' second son, would too become a fireman, and just a few years ago, Brian, Barry's son, joined the team. That makes roots three generations deep right here at our hometown station.

Barry has been toying with the idea of retirement for a year now, but after 35 years of service, he just recently decided it's time.

"I'm getting old," he said. "I'm ready. I've been here a long time. I think it's time to let these other guys have a chance."
