Elk City man pleads guilty to firearms theft

Earlier this week, an Elk City man pleaded guilty to three felony counts stemming from a September heist from a local pawn shop.

Clayton John Shinn, 22, pleaded guilty to stealing 25 firearms, announced U.S. Attorney Sanford C. Coats. According to court records, on September 6, 2011, Shinn stole the following firearms from Stout & Son Pawn in Elk City:

(8)     One Taurus, model 738, .380 caliber pistol

(9)    Smith & Wesson, model 642, .38 special caliber revolver

(10)    Chiapa, model M422, .22 caliber rifle

(11)    Taurus, model 991, .22 caliber revolver

(12)     Browning, model Buckmark, .22 caliber pistol

Shinn was indicted on January 17 and pled guilty earlier this week to three counts: theft of the 25 firearms from a licensed firearms dealer, unlawful possession of 25 stolen firearms, and being a prior convicted felon unlawfully in possession of the 25 firearms.

At sentencing, Shinn faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each of the three counts. Shinn remains in custody at the Grady County Jail until a sentencing hearing, which will be set by United States District Judge Stephen Friot in approximately 90 days.

These charges are the result of an investigation conducted by the Elk City Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.  The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Travis Smith.
