Beckham County sheriff’s deputies arrested Erick Mayor Tommy "TJ" Smith Monday, on suspicion he used a vehicle without the owners permission.
He was also booked on suspicion of driving without a valid driver's license.
Smith is the mayor of Erick, located in western Beckham County.
Smith was arrested along with Erick resident Teka Holland, who faces a charge of unauthorized use of a vehicle.
Both are in custody at the Beckham County Jail, pending arraignment.
Smith and Holland, who according to the sheriff's department are living together, were in possession of a vehicle which had been loaned to Holland to run an errand.
According to a report issued by the sheriff, Holland did not return the vehicle when asked and was seen driving it around Erick. The owner of the vehicle requested several times for Holland to return the vehicle, but she didn’t, the sheriff's department said. Smith reportedly also knew that the car was to be returned, but allegedly stated that they didn’t have to and weren’t going to.
Smith was formerly the town’s police chief.
The owner of the vehicle told deputies that when he reported it to the current chief of police, he was told he couldn’t do anything about it because of a conflict of interest, and that it was a civil matter anyway.
Beckham County sheriff’s deputies located the vehicle and took both into custody without incident.
