A woman armed with a scrapbook full of photos that captured Elk City in the 1950s made her way through what used to be her hometown a few weeks ago. When Marilyn Monroe Kilmer lived here, she was just a little girl, and her dad, John B. Monroe, managed all three movie theaters in Elk City at the time – The Rex, The Elk and the Westland.
When John passed away at the age of 91 in Modesto, Calif. in 2001, he left behind a variety of black and white slides of photos that he had taken when he lived in Elk City over 60 years ago.
"She came in [to the store] and she said, 'I have some pictures here. Would you like to see them?'" Jan Litterell, long-time employee of Something Special on South Main Street, said.
The photos that she pulled out were pictures of the Elk Theater that used to sit where Something Special is today.
