There's less than 24 hours left before Elk Citians can head to Ackley Park to stake their claim on a piece of city property where they will be able to pop fireworks to their heart's content. Because of last year's burn ban during the Fourth of July, Elk City Police Chief Eddie Holland believes there's increased excitement for this year's Independence Day celebration.
According to the police department, shooting fireworks is prohibited anywhere within city limits, except for Ackley Park on the Fourth of July.
In order to remain prepared for potential fires on the holiday, all fire personnel will be working that evening.
"We will have firetrucks around the park and we will possibly have one throughout the outskirts of town somewhere because people are always going out of town to set them off, and we have to try and keep up with that," Word said. "Everybody has to be available that evening."
The firework show will being shortly after dark at Ackley Park.
