The physical makeup of weight-room equipment is much like that of its monetary cost — hefty.
The Elk City High School football program will hold its second “Lift-A-Thon” Friday, May 18 at the Elk City Junior High Gym to generate funds for the upkeep of the ECHS strength facility, as well as new football uniforms and the football team’s summer camp.
“It’s ridiculous how much [weight room equipment] costs now,” ECHS Football Coach Jason Scheck said. “If at all possible, funds from this event will go towards that.”
However, the first priority is to help pay for new home and away football uniforms, which cost about $12,400 overall. The second priority is to defer the cost of ECHS’ participation at the three-day summer football camp at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas, which costs $200 per athlete, with no additional funding.
Finally, if possible, the money will help in the continued up-keep and improvement of the ECHS strength facility.
The average cost of a barbell is $200 per bar, a dumbell is about $1.25 per pound, and bumper plates are roughly $2.25 per pound.
“On any given day in the summer, we have about 150 kids, from all sports, who use this facility. This money is not just for the football program,” Scheck said.
