As usual, Shawn Wilson said it better than as anyone else.
“Even ‘Mash’ had its last episode.”
Seventeen years ago, the “The Coaches Corner” radio show was born in the iconic Route 66 restaurant, “The Flamingo.” For 10 years, the show ran there, before moving to the Holiday Inn (now Clarion Inn) for five years, then finally settling at The Grill at 1705 Great Plains Regional Medical Center.
As it turns out, GPRMC will be the final location of the radio program, which provided a platform for Elk City and area high school coaches for nearly two decades. Wilson, the Sports Director at KECO radio, said the show, which has seen a decline in attendance by such coaches, has simply run its course.
“You know, we used to average about 20 to 25 people every Saturday. Now, it’s just about two or three. We at Paragon have some new shows and programming in the planning stages, but still hate to say goodbye to an old friend.”
Wilson worked with just two co-hosts in 17 years of the show’s existence — Justin Ediger (12 years) and Josh White (5 years). The high school sports show was a way for coaches to gather, talk about their respective sports, or reflect on a past game. It also gave the players a chance to take to the airwaves.
