Elk City Tallies 11.38% Rise in September Sales Tax Revenue
26 October 2026
Elk City's latest sales-tax distribution shows another double-digit percentage gain, as the city collected $1,538,259.60 in September 2026. That sum is 11.38% higher than the same period in 2025, continuing a trend of healthy revenues from retail commerce and adaptation to recent economic changes.
The September revenue includes primarily retail activity from late July through mid-August. It reinforces the trajectory from earlier in the year, when the city saw solid gains of 10.07% in April 2026 and 6.5% in June. Those two earlier distributions drew from first-quarter and late spring local commerce.
Sales tax is a key revenue stream for Elk City, making up the bulk of its budget. Over 50% of the city government's total sales tax income came from the one-cent Scalable Infrastructure Tax (STI) approved by local voters in February 2019. The city predicts that one-cent sales tax to raise $70 million in total for community capital projects over a 20-year span.
As measured by the Oklahoma Tax Commission, the city's sales-tax rates currently come out on top in northwestern Oklahoma. The city has imposed a 4.5% sales-tax rate on in-city purchases since April 2015, ranking it at the top of the commission's most recent list.

As Local Retail Activity Remains Robust
Given the September sales tax receipts, Elk City is finding some economic benefits in its recent tax policy and rate adjustment. Still, sales tax revenues alone cannot solve every municipal challenge.
Statistics from the state tax commission and city finance department show no new local casino projects, but that doesn't signal an economic downturn in Elk City. The city is using its current tax tools to adapt to an evolving municipal economy.
