Elk City Schools Approve $1.6 Million in Building Bonds

31 October 2026

Elk City Public Schools has approved another round of building bonds, earmarking $1.6 million in funding. This comes as the district pursues renovations and new facilities to support student growth. The board gave a vote of approval at its regular meeting on April 13, clearing the way for a bond sale.

While details on the exact renovation plans and scope of work are not included in the minutes, the district's recent history of bond funding suggests the new money will likely support long-term infrastructure projects to benefit students and staff.

The school board regularly considers bond resolutions, approving those needed to keep up with maintenance and enrollment-related facility demand. This is the second significant bond sale in under a year - the board approved another $1.5 million in building bonds at its April meeting last year.

Approving the bond resolution at the April meeting was simply the board's first formal step in securing funds for the project. Now that the resolution has been approved, the district must put the bond out to sale. The timeline will depend on market conditions and the bond structure selected. Local residents may vote on the bond, but not if bond financing is kept within statutory limits.

The board also considered several other action items at the April 13 meeting, including appointing Mike Sparks as Federal Programs Custodian for the upcoming term and adding volleyball to the middle school athletic lineup for next year. The board discussed stadium renovation bids and student transfer capacity limits, all in the service of supporting growing enrollment.

While the $1.6 million approved bonds represent a commitment to district infrastructure, some may point out they are a modest sum for major facility upgrades. Further, the amount pales compared to ambitious expansion plans that have been floated, such as a $12 million STEM building with spaces for technical training.

The district holds public meetings in the Board Conference Room at 300 N Boone Ave. Board activity is recorded in the public archive, where the public can access past minutes.
