Locals with old computers, dusty monitors and TVs, broken household appliances and other electronics can safely dispose of them this Saturday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.

City Operations Supervisor Larry Hart said he hopes there is high turnout for the "e-cycling" event, which is free for most items brought to the drop-off point at the ag barn behind the Elk City Civic Center.

"Anything electronic can be brought out there. If it has a cord, it can be brought out. Batteries, car batteries are also included in that," he said.

Glass tube monitors and TVs will costs those who bring those for the collection event. The old "CRT" monitors cost $5 to dispose of, and TVs that fall in this category will set back their owners $10 to $30, depending on its size.

This will be one of the few ways to legally to dispose of glass tube monitors and TVs, Hart said, because the city's landfill cannot take them.

"By law, we're not to accept glass tube televisions or monitors in the landfill," he said. "They can't legally go in the landfill."

Also, batteries can leach toxic metals into the groundwater over time.
