In a special meeting of the Elk City Commission Thursday night, commissioners approved receiving a grant for airport improvements.
The Federal Aviation Administration awarded the city $174,956 for runway and taxiway striping, and beacon lights.
“When we get an airport grant we always have to do a resolution accepting the grant, and we received this yesterday in the mail and the deadline for the acceptance to be back to them is September 7," said City Manager Anita Archer. "That is the reason for the emergency meeting.”
The project was originally bid by Continental Construction at just under $150,000, but engineering costs are expected to push that figure higher.
The meeting gave the commission an opportunity to authorize Mayor Teresa Mullican to sign off on the project and accept the grant money.
The commission's next regularly-scheduled meeting is September 19.
